Wind Mitigation for Roof Damage in Naples

Wind Mitigation for Roof Damage

Wind mitigation is an inspection report that may qualify you and your home for discounts on your homeowner's insurance policy.

The discounts you could receive are meant to reward those who have wind-resistance components on their home that decrease the amount of damage that may occur during a storm such as a hurricane. If you sustain little or no damage from the storm, it equates to less costs for the insurance company. These savings are passed on to you as the homeowner in the form of wind mitigation discounts that make your policy cheaper for you.

The primary factors in wind mitigation reports are the wind-resistant features of your home. The features that count include:  Is your home constructed of concrete block or wood? Does your roof have gable-end bracing or does it consist of a hip roof? Is there the presence of a single or double roof strap at your roof-to-wall tie-downs? What is the type of roof covering and is there a secondary water resistant barrier?

Your insurance carrier will want to know the answers to these questions in order to access your homeowner’s rates. You will need to contact a certified wind mitigation inspector from a list that your insurance agent will provide you. Then allow the inspector to inspect your home and send the report to your agent. From this report, your rates will be set.

Uplift Requirements: There are multiple uplift ratings and requirements for the various types of roofs and roofing materials available. As long as the products have a Florida product approval, it means that they meet at least the minimum requirements for their specific systems. The best way to increase the uplift resistance for the attachment method of your new roof is to talk with your roofer about additional methods or give us a call so we can discuss your alternatives.

Involving Your Insurance Carrier: Anytime you reroof, remodel or add an addition to your home, you should first involve your insurance carrier or agent. By doing this, you can become informed on the products and the building methods that can help to lower your insurance rates.
