Uplift Requirements for Roofs

All approved methods of roofing have a resistance to wind uplift rating. These ratings set a minimum standard that is adopted by most building codes. In Florida, resistant uplift requirements have been enhanced to establish tougher standards due to the possibility of hurricane damage.

Asphalt shingles, slate, wood shakes and wood shingles all have an approved installation method that provides for a minimal uplift resistance value that is acceptable for use in Florida. Like with metal roofs, the manufacturers of all roofing materials supply an installation method that satisfies the approved installation methods for the area or county you live. To increase the uplift resistance if desired, a brief discussion needs to take place with your roofer and the material representative.

Concrete and clay roof tiles have the most documented procedures for obtaining the proper or increased uplift resistance values. The "Concrete And Clay Roof Tile Installation Manual" provides a Florida county map with wind speed zones and charts listing the uplift values required in these different wind zones. It also provides for a complete installation method that results in the achievement of the desired uplift requirement or value. Concrete and clay roof tiles are far more regulated by their installations due to the damage possibilities during hurricanes if they are inadequately installed.

The uplift requirements are not uniform for the different roofing systems but there are some notable changes to what is acceptable in other states around the country. Even though there are minimum standards that are established in the building code additional measures can in most cases be applied to protect your roof from incurring roof damage during a storm.

Always ask the roofers you have bidding on your roof project what attachment methods they plan to use and are there any additional methods that they can utilize to increase the uplift resistance of the system they are offering. In order to be awarded the project, the roofer may be willing to add some perimeter enhancements at no additional costs to you that will give you an overall better roof system. We can help by insuring that  the additional measures are carried out for your benefit.
